Wichita Symphony Releases Educational Coloring Book as Part of Summer Storytime Series
Wichita, KS – This summer, families across the region are invited to experience music, storytelling, and creativity with the return of Symphony Storytime, a free performance series from the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Each 35-minute performance brings together a small ensemble of professional musicians representing the four instrument families—strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion—and features interactive musical play, a children’s book read-aloud, and hands-on percussion fun.
As a special gift to young attendees, each child will receive a copy of the brand-new “Color the Wichita Symphony” coloring book, a 28-page illustrated journey to Century II Concert Hall and through the instruments of the orchestra. Created by artist Lindsey Kernodle, the book features whimsical scenes depicting the concert experience and introduces a feathered musical guide named Sonetto the song sparrow. The book was designed to complement the Wichita Public Library’s 2025 Summer Reading theme, Color Our World, and invites kids to imagine themselves as the next generation of musicians, conductors, and music-lovers.
“We hope that this coloring book will spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and create a foundation of wonder and appreciation for music that lasts a lifetime,” said Tim Storhoff, Executive Director of the Wichita Symphony. “Anyone who has attended a Wichita Symphony concert will see locations and faces they recognize in Lindsey Kernodle’s fun and engaging artwork. It’s a colorful way to celebrate our musicians, our community, and the magic of live music.”
The Symphony Storytime program reflects the Wichita Symphony’s mission to enrich, educate, and entertain diverse audiences of all ages through orchestral music. New for 2025, the schedule includes bilingual and sensory-friendly performances to ensure accessibility for all families.
In addition to public events, Symphony Storytime will travel to youth-serving organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Heartspring, and local summer programs across the region.
