Step into a nocturnal sound world where the hypnotic patterns of Philip Glass, one of America’s most influential minimalist composers, collide with the neon-soaked energy of 1980s New Wave hits.

Performed inside a stunning, custom-designed light installation taking over Wichita’s iconic Odd Fellow Hall, Neon Strings is a continuous, 55-minute sensory journey that strips away traditional classical conventions to reveal the shared rhythmic pulse between Glass’s minimalist sound world and New Wave’s synth-driven mix of punk, pop, and art-rock attitude.

A powerhouse Wichita Symphony quartet locks into the hypnotic, cinematic drive of Philip Glass’s String Quartet No. 3, “Mishima,” originally written in 1985 for the film of the same name. Glass’s repeating patterns and shifting textures flow into string arrangements of Kate Bush, The Cure, Madonna, Talking Heads, Tears for Fears, and more, creating a bridge between minimalist classical music and the bright, restless sound of the 1980s. With no intermission and an immersive, music-reactive atmosphere, this is your WSO experienced in a completely new, vivid light.

Following the concert, attendees are invited to stay at Odd Fellow Hall to explore the light installation, order food and a themed cocktail, and mingle with the artists while a playlist of 1980s hits continues the evening.

About Mason Talbott

Mason Talbott is a collaborative light artist based in Wichita, Kansas. Talbott paints environments with RGB floodlights using the objects and people within them to create site-specific installations where the dynamic shadows become a central actor. While his personal practice is more nature-based, Talbott regularly collaborates with musicians, dancers, gardeners, painters, and other creatives to accentuate their processes and bring out new dimensions in their own work. Our local Harvester Arts has been a major resource in his artistic upbringing. Find more of his work at instagram.com/masonlitthat
