Century II Concert Hall

featuring Gabriela Martinez, piano

Step into the private world of the 19th century’s most legendary musical circle. This performance maps the emotional landscape of Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Johannes Brahms, weaving their most personal music together with live readings from the letters and journals they exchanged. Experience the stoic longing of Brahms’s Tragic Overture and the luminous virtuosity of Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto—featuring the return of acclaimed pianist Gabriela Martinez—culminating in the hard-won triumph of Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2. As the music unfolds, the composers’ own voices will guide you through their shared history of devotion, sacrifice, and artistic survival. It is an immersive narrative that blurs the line between the concert hall and the diary page, revealing the human hearts behind the masterpieces.

About Gabriela Martinez

Venezuelan‑born pianist Gabriela Martinez is a bold, imaginative artist whose performances combine technical mastery with emotional immediacy. A fifth‑generation pianist, she has appeared with more than 100 orchestras, including the San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, San Diego, New Jersey, Pacific, and Fort Worth Symphonies, as well as major European ensembles such as the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony, and Nürnberger Philharmoniker.

Martinez is equally at home in classical repertoire and contemporary music. She has commissioned and premiered works by leading composers including Mason Bates, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Paola Prestini, Jessica Meyer, and Dan Visconti, championing new voices and expanding the modern piano canon. Her debut album, Amplified Soul, released on the Delos label, was recognized through producer David Frost’s GRAMMY Award for Producer of the Year.

Beyond the concert hall, Martinez leads a life as dynamic as her artistry, she has summited Mount Kilimanjaro, run multiple marathons, and balances her musical career with motherhood, gardening, and a love of the outdoors. Her performances radiate the same adventurous spirit that defines her life.
