Rainbow Body

By Christopher Theofanidis

A Note from Concertmaster Holly

American composer Christopher Theofanidis has a remarkable way of painting with sound. The first movement of his violin concerto is full of color, texture, and intentionality, with each note giving direction and purpose. Listening gives a glimpse of how he sculpts sound and light through music.

This is a taste of his composing voice, which you’ll hear in Rainbow Body, performed alongside Korngold’s Violin Concerto in our upcoming concert on October 5th. Experiencing Theofanidis’s approach now will make the live performance even more exhilarating.

Questions for thought as you listen:

  1. The opening of this concerto sets a distinct mood with building percussion and brass, followed by the strings. When the violin enters, what does that response mean to you?
  2. Do you think this might be Theofanidis's way of evoking light, movement, or natural pheomena? If so, what comes to mind?
